The official game
Official Rock-Paper-Scissors is built so that both players commit before either one can see the other’s move.
The official rules are described on the rules page.
Why random play is the safe baseline
Game theory treats Rock-Paper-Scissors as a simple mixed-strategy game: a player who picks each of the three options with equal, independent probability cannot be systematically exploited, no matter what an opponent does, because there is no pattern in that choice for an opponent to read. In practice, people rarely play that way. A laboratory study of 360 students split into 60 groups of six, playing 300 rounds each, found that players tended to repeat their previous move after a win and switch after a loss, a "win-stay, lose-shift" style of response. The researchers also observed persistent cyclic patterns at the group level. That is a tendency measured in one study, not a method for winning any single match.
Practical tips that follow from the rules
- Always submit a choice. If time runs out, the server picks Rock, Paper, or Scissors for you at random, which throws away any edge you might otherwise have had.
- Do not wait to react. Your choice locks in the moment you submit it, and it stays hidden from your opponent until the match resolves, so there is nothing to see and respond to beforehand.
- Know how ties are settled. A tied throw moves to a fast tap race rather than being replayed, and if the race is still level when time runs out, the server settles it with a random draw; see the how-to-play guide for the exact sequence.
- Avoid falling into a pattern. Since real opponents tend to repeat after winning and switch after losing, staying aware of your own habits and mixing up your choices denies a human opponent an easy read.
- Watch and learn while you wait. Once you are eliminated from a round you can spectate an active match and see how other players tend to behave, though pairings are shuffled each round, so you cannot know in advance who you will actually face next.
What strategy cannot do
No pattern, habit, or read on an opponent changes the odds against a player who is genuinely choosing at random, and RPS Royale keeps every choice hidden until a match resolves, so there is no tell to watch for in the moment. The most that awareness of common human tendencies can do is help you avoid predictable habits of your own while staying alert to an opponent’s.
